My Favorite Back-to-School Essentials for Kids

Back to school shopping is one of our family's favorite annual traditions, but as a parent, the whole back-to-school season can sometimes feel as overwhelming as it does exciting.

To help make things easier, I have compiled a list of all my favorite back-to-school items and must-haves for you to make sure that your kiddos have everything they need to start the school year off right!

Cool and Comfortable Clothing:

When it comes to back-to-school fashion, comfort is key. My go-to clothing items are soft and durable t-shirts, cozy sweatshirts, and comfortable jeans or leggings. Pair them with some trendy sneakers, and your child will be ready to rock any classroom!

MOM TIP: Try to find clothing pieces that mix and match well so that it’s easy for them to put together their outfits in the morning without help. I also recommend buying socks that are all the same brand and color so that you can avoid having to match socks on busy mornings!

Stylish Backpack:

A good backpack is essential. I recommend choosing one that not only reflects your child's personal style but also offers ample storage space. Look for one with multiple compartments to keep their books, laptop, water bottle and other items organized. I also recommend making sure to find one that has adjustable, padded shoulder straps to ensure a comfortable fit!

MOM TIP: Stay away from leather or suede options if you want to be able to throw the backpack in your washing machine for easy cleaning! Also, avoid light colors if you are worried about staining.

Functional Lunch Bag / Lunch Box:

Staying fueled throughout the day is crucial to keeping kids focused and energized. If your child brings their lunch from home, opt for a lunch bag that is insulated to keep their food fresh and cool. I also like to make sure that they are stain resistant for easy care!

School Supplies:

From taking notes to completing assignments, having the right supplies is a must. Most schools will have a list of basic supplies that your child will need. I like to focus on picking up those required items first (some stores sell out quickly) and then I let my kids pick out some fun stationery and other accessories to help make the school year fun!

MOM TIP: If you have multiple kids, try to buy your school supplies in bulk! You can get a discount by buying the larger packs of pencils, glue sticks, etc. and then you can just split them up between your children's classrooms! Check out my FREE printable checklist below!

Planner or Organizer:

Help your student stay organized and manage their time effectively with a good planner or organizer. Whether they prefer a digital or paper-based option, having a designated place to jot down important deadlines, assignments, and extracurricular activities is a game changer!

MOM TIP: If you choose a paper-based planner option, encourage your child to stay on track and use their planner daily by providing them with some fun, colorful markers and planner stickers!

In 2023, having the right tech is essential. A reliable laptop or tablet is a must for research, assignments, and staying connected with classmates. Keep your devices protected with a sturdy laptop sleeve or case. Don't forget to invest in a pair of durable headphones for distraction-free study and online classes.

Staying hydrated is vital for maintaining focus throughout the day. A reusable water bottle is not only eco-friendly but also a super convenient option. Look for one that is insulated that also has a spill-proof design!
